We are a friendly approachable electronic design consultancy, based in beautiful Somerset.

We design bespoke embedded control systems, mainly for commercial building controls and home automation.

Our mission is to make complex design processes simple and understandable.

History

Designerds was established in 2011 by Ben Mack.

After graduating in 1984, and working as a design engineer for companies such as AB Electronics, in 1989 Ben was one of the three founding members of Watchfront Ltd.

After 21 years as a senior engineer and director at Watchfront, as their business model diversified, Ben decided to set up a separate venture focussed purely on design. Designerds still has a close working relationship with Watchfront, and is involved in the design and development of the FireBrick range of network appliances.

Our offices

We are based near Taunton in Somerset, south of Bristol, with easy access to the South of England and the Midlands. We are 20 minutes from the M5, and London is just 1h40m by train.

Our offices are in a beautiful converted barn set in picturesque gardens, on the edge of a small Somerset village set between Exmoor and the Quantocks. A true rural idyll, which is great for inspiration and clear thinking, and which clients love to visit!

Meet the team

Ben is the principle engineer, and handles most of the hardware and software design for commercial building controls.
Toby, who until recently was a senior engineer and project manager at Nokia UK, is using his experience with consumer products to develop residential systems.

In addition, John is our business advisor, Eileen does the books, tax returns, and other admin, and we use various other people for marketing, website design etc.. By paying others to handle the business side of things, we can focus on design, which is our passion, and is of course what our clients pay us for!

A one-stop-shop

We also have close working relationships with other service providers, so we can provide additional services as needed. We can either refer clients to these companies, or subcontract their services thus making Designerds a one-stop-shop.
